Washington, D.C. – September 11, 2012 – Ocean Champions, which works to build political power for the oceans by  helping to elect pro-ocean candidates to the U.S. Congress, proudly endorses Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD). “Throughout his Congressional career, Senator Cardin has been a leader on ocean, coastal and bay health issues,” said  David Wilmot, Ph.D., Ocean Champions’ President and Co-Founder. “He consistently fights to ensure that our nation’s  bedrock conservation laws are protected, and emerging threats to clean air and water are addressed.”

As the Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife, Senator Cardin works to  protect essential habitat such as wetlands and estuaries. He has authored laws to address polluted stormwater runoff,  passed bills to preserve critical estuaries, and cosponsored a bill to address Harmful Algal Blooms and Hypoxic dead  zones. Chesapeake Bay health is a focal point of the Senator’s environmental leadership, where he has introduced a bill  to accelerate Bay restoration by engaging states, counties, municipalities, businesses, sportsmen and environmental  groups.

Senator Cardin is also working hard to address climate change by pushing for a clean energy future and preparing for the changing weather conditions that are already impacting our infrastructure. The Senator believes that investing in  renewable energy technology will help reduce the impact of global warming while also reviving our economy. He has  cosponsored several measures to catalyze clean energy development while opposing expansion of offshore oil drilling. In  response to the disruptions caused by recent extreme weather, Senator Cardin has introduced the Water Infrastructure  Resiliency and Sustainability Act, which will enable communities to strengthen their water systems against these new
challenges.

“Marylanders understand the essential role that water and our oceans have in a healthy economy and healthy  environment. I thank Ocean Champions for their great work. I’m proud to be a part of a nationwide effort to prioritize  good science-based stewardship of American waters so that they can sustain native fish, wildlife and our coastal  economies for generations,” said Senator Cardin. Senator Ben Cardin is one of the most respected members of the U.S.  Congress, and a true champion for Maryland, our oceans and coasts.Ocean Champions is the only nonprofit political organization that endorses pro-ocean Congressional candidates and lobbies members of Congress on behalf of the oceans.
